Using 16" or 17" wheel/tire combo

W/o going to a shop to have them mount a 16" or 17" wheel on my truck, will either size fit on my 08?
My 02 had 16" wheels and;
1) I could give two sh$ts about bling, big rims and what not. It came w/ 18's but the selection of tires for both street and drag are nearly non-existant.
2) 16's or 17's would give me a larger selection of wheels and tires.

Any experience on this?

Your brakes are too big for a 16" wheel. I cant find it now but I think the XL trucks came with 17" steel wheels.

I read another similiar post and folks were stating the 17's work but may need a little caliper grinding depending on the rim
it should be easy to tell if you look and your current clearance?

It seems pretty tight in there. I may be stuck w/ 18's...
