I am the proud new owner of a '88 1 ton dually service truck.
wasn't sure what to expect compared to my DD '99 for the last 5 years and almost 275k, but am pleasantly suprised , it's very easy to drive and the more i crawl around looks to be easy to work on:pointlaugh: just bought it today from a Const. Co has maitenance records to 465k  its on its 3rd motor. tranny looks to be rebuilt and runs great. any tips /sugggetions?
TIA-Jeff

If you don't mind loud a straight pipe or glass pack will help it out some. Cut the soup bowl off the intake pan, if anything else it makes filter changes easier. If you got some spare tubing laying around might even work on modding the intake alittle.

Helped drop my EGT alittle, maybe no change preformance wise but I like it better than the stock one. I wouldn't even bother playing with the pump on these trucks, actually I might back mine off alittle.

Open up intake and exhaust as much as possible, change the oil and keep GOOD coolant in it with the proper SCA and drive it for another 400k miles.

sounds good to me :D spent most of the weekend cleaning it out and mounting the welder/generator/air commpressor, swapping all the tools and came across a binder with maintance records from '92 - '07.

Glow plug controller might be drawing a phuc load of amps causing the freak out.

Make sure the thermostat is good. They will cycle the glow plugs till they burn up if the temp is not right. They have a bad habit of splitting and dropping into the cylinder.

Scrap that GP controller and just run a switch and relay.

well i guess i had a brain fart :pointlaugh: only the amp gauge moves, should be normal? my friends '92 does the same thing. this SOB is heavy, weighed 10,300 with out much in the bed, think I'll be looking for a F450/550 and newer with a turbo. I cant even imagine trying to pull a trailer behind it.

Do you mean the amp gauge moves at start up? That is normal as it's just the glow plugs cycling for 10 seconds to about 30+secs.

Yes, once it starts all are normal, thanks

Yep they like to cycle for how ever long they feel like. If you have your lights on they will dim & get brighter then dim & get brighter.
